Can we stop calling them “Tibetan Singing Bowls,” please?!
I use mixed-metal bowls in some of my sound baths. They have a warm, soothing sound and are a favorite of mine to use. You've likely heard them referred to as "Tibetan singing bowls." These beautiful instruments have gained much popularity recently, and many people believe they have mystical origins. However, the truth may surprise you.
According to a 2020 article in Tricycle, the idea that these bowls are Tibetan in origin is a myth. The article explains, "While singing bowls have become synonymous with Tibetan Buddhism in the West, there is no evidence that they were ever used in Tibet for religious or ritual purposes." The article explains that singing bowls originated in China, where they were used for cooking and storage before their unique sound was discovered. That’s right, cooking and storage. No mysticism was involved. They were practical!
This idea is echoed in a recent article in the Toronto Star entitled "‘Tibetan singing bowls’ are not Tibetan. Sincerely, a Tibetan person." The article, written by Tenzin Dheden (a Tibetan woman), explains that while singing bowls are now often associated with Tibetan culture and spirituality, they have no traditional or religious significance in Tibetan culture. The author says these false beliefs harm Tibetans and that “the bowl has become an object of orientalist fetishization.” So, it’s extremely important that as these gain popularity, we call them what they are: metal singing bowls.
So, if mixed-metal singing bowls don't have mystical origins, why have they become so popular in the world of sound healing? The answer likely lies in that they produce a unique and soothing sound that can have powerful healing effects on the body and mind.
Listening to a "sound bath" with mixed-metal singing bowls is said to have various benefits, including reducing stress and anxiety, improving sleep, and promoting feelings of relaxation and well-being. Some practitioners also believe the bowls' sound vibrations can help balance the chakras and promote physical healing…which could be
The popularity of singing bowls in recent years is likely attributed to a growing interest in alternative forms of healing and self-care. As people seek new ways to improve their well-being, they turn to practices like meditation and sound healing to help them find balance and inner peace.
So while the mystical origins of mixed-metal singing bowls may be a myth, there's no denying the power of their vibrations to help us relax and find stillness in a busy world. Whether you're a seasoned meditator or new to the practice, a sound bath with a singing bowl can be a wonderful way to unwind and connect with your inner self. Let’s just stop calling these bowls “Tibetan” and trying to attach mystical qualities to them. In all truth, they just sound nice.
